2025 was a particularly noteworthy year for the Friends of Silverbrook as well as the cemetery itself. The financial support we received from members and other friends was the most we have recorded in the 19 years of our existence. Many of our members included financial donations over and above our membership fees while others assisted with stone restoration efforts, the annual fall tour, and general upkeep of the property. Our group also purchases flags for 2300 veterans who are buried on the grounds as well as operating and maintaining the Friends of Silverbrook website. We appreciate all the support we receive and the positive comments we have received from the public show our efforts are making a difference.

We were also fortunate to receive some special gifts in the form of new flagpoles within the cemetery gates. The large United States flagpole in front of the Abbey was replaced and dedicated in memory Sargeant Major Leon Bertschy, US Marine. Gretchen Bertschy organized the fund raising effort along with other friends, relatives, and other service members. Tim Gondeck also donated a new flagpole at the entrance of the cemetery as a memorial to his parents, James Gondeck, US Navy WWII veteran and Patricia Gondeck. Patricia was a commercial pilot who flew for several local corporations in addition to serving as a valuable member of the administration at the University of Notre Dame.

We would also be remiss if we did not acknowledge the passing of Tim Skalla this past December. While a member of the Niles city council, Tim was an advocate for improving the appearance of Silverbrook Cemetery, and through his efforts, was instrumental in the establishment of the group that today is known as the Friends of Silverbrook Cemetery.

Your generosity in every way you assist our efforts is greatly appreciated. We are truly fortunate to have a community that cares.
