Rood, George P. PDF Print E-mail

George P. "Gramps" Rood, 96, of Sheridan Avenue, Niles, Michigan, died following a brief illness at 6:15 p.m. Sunday, July 2, 2006, in Lakeland Hospital, Saint Joseph, Michigan.

Mr. Rood was born on August 31, 1909, in Niles, to Alfred and Mary (Mingle) Rood. He had lived in Niles all of his life and attended Niles schools. George retired from the South Bend Tribune as head electrician, and continued to consult when needed.

Mr. Rood was a 65-year member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Labor Union. He was also a member of the Edwardsburg Conservation Club. George was an avid hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed breeding hunting dogs. He was also a great fan of the University of Michigan.

On April 13, 1933, in Elkhart, he married the former Doris M. Walter, who died January 2, 1985.

Mr. Rood is survived by a stepdaughter, Darlene Kujawa of Niles; two granddaughters, Linda (Pete) Logalbo of Niles and Rita Prange-Kujawa of Edwardsburg, Michigan; four grandsons, Joseph Kujawa and Scott Kujawa, both of Niles, Steven (Linda) Kujawa of Edwardsburg, Michigan, and Frank (Janet) Kujawa of Cassopolis, Michigan; 10 great-grandchildren, including Carl, Jeff and Jill, who were especially close to him; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

George was also preceded in death by three brothers, Robert Rood, Henry Rood and Roy Rood; and by two sisters, Grace Prestine and Maedean Williamson.

The family is gathering privately for the funeral services on July 7, 2006, for George P. "Gramps" Rood in the Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles, with The Rev. David Otto from Saint Mary Catholic Church officiating. Burial will be at Silverbrook Cemetery in Niles.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 6 to 8:00 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Contributions in memory of George P. "Gramps" Rood may be made to the Edwardsburg Conservation Club.

Robert Wilson Rood, 90, of Niles, Michigan, died February 6, 2004, at Lakeland Medical Center, Niles. Robert wished that no services or visitation be held in his memory, and for cremation to take place. Interment of his cremains will take place at Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles, at a later date.

He was born on December 24, 1913, in Niles, Michigan. He retired as a welder from Tyler Refrigeration in 1975. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, and enjoyed woodworking. He was preceded in death by his two wives, June (1956) and Marilyn (1998).

He is survived by a son, Dennis (Kristi) Rood of Clarksville, Arkansas; three daughters, Patricia (William) Anderson of Buchanan, Michigan, Mary (William) Miswick and Cheryl (Gary) Crouch, both of Niles; six grandchildren, Melanie, Julie, Eric, Dan, Kyle and Courtney; and six great-grandchildren, Hailey, Jordan, Jacob, Jarod, Ethan and Sarah; one brother, George Rood of Niles; and a sister, Mae Dean Williamson of Dowagiac.

Rooks, Hazel (Hoover) PDF Print E-mail

Hazel M. Rooks

The family of Hazel M. Rooks, 87, 1602 Oak St, Niles, will gather privately for services at Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles, by the Rev. Dr. Ronald H. Wakeman of First Presbyterian church. Burial will follow at Silverbrtook Cemetery.

Mrs. Rooks died Friday July 30, 1999, at 10 p.m. at home of natural causes. She was born April 27, 1912 in Cass county. She had lived in this are all of her life and graduated from Niles Central High School.

On October 1, 1932 in south Bend, In., she married Leslie G. Rooks, who died May 9, 1995.

Mrs. Rooks was a member of First Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed flower gardening and feeding and watching the birds. She was preceded in death by a sister, Gladys M. Blair on Feb. 23.

Surviving family includes a sister, Helen Kessler of Niles; a brother, Lynne Hoover of South Bend, IN; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call Monday from 6 to8 p.m. in Halbritter Funeral Home.

Leslie G. Rooks

Private services will be held for Leslie G. Rooks, 87, of 1602 Oak St., Niles, by the Rev. Dr. Ronald H. Wakeman of First Presbyterian Church of Niles. Burial will be at Silverbook Cemetery, Niles.

Mr. Rooks died at 6:58 p.m. Tuesday, May 9, 1995, in Pawating Hospital, Niles, following a brief illness. He was born July 19, 19076, in Holland, MI, and had lived in Niles since 1929, coming from Holland.

On October 1, 1932 in South Bend, IN, he married the former Hazel M. Hoover, who survives.

Mr. Rooks was retired from United Dairy of Niles. Prior to working for United Dairy, he had worked with his father at Niles Creamery. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and Bend of the River Grange of Niles. He was a graduated of Holland High School. He was an avid gardener.

Other survivors include a sister, Mrs. Arthur Peabody of Niles; a brother, Lloyd Rooks of South Bend, IN. He was preceded in death by an infant sister and a brother, Leon Rooks.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Halbritter funeral Home, Niles. Memorial contributions may be made to the Foundation of First Presbyterian Church, Niles, or to the charity of the donor's choice.
