Virginia K. “Ginny” Mullett, 93, formerly of Onekama, Mich. and Regent St. in Niles, died at 10:33 p.m. Saturday, May 7, 2011 at Brentwood Assisted Living Community in Niles, following an illness.

She was born on Feb. 16, 1918 in Andrews, Neb. to Harold Theodore and Clara Marie (Mortenson) Mortensen.

She graduated from Bangor High School in Bangor, Mich. and lived much of her life in Niles.

In the 1960′s she was director of the Niles School for Exceptional Children.

Virginia attended Hope Community Church in Niles. She enjoyed volunteering for a variety of organizations, including Hospice at Home and Girl Scouts of America. She was a member of Fernwood Botanical Garden and Nature Center where she volunteered every Tuesday on the trails.

She was a lifetime seamstress and member of the Quilter’s Guild.

On Feb. 14, 1941 in St. Joseph, she married Gerald Eugene “Bud” Mullett, who preceded her in death on June 13, 2000.

Virginia was also preceded in death by her brother, Jack Mortensen and sisters Eileen Monahon and Sylva Gilmore.

She is survived by a son, Theodore Lee (Sue) Mullett and daughter Linda Lee (Kenneth) Schiele both of Niles; grandchildren Michael (Kathy) Schiele, Anna (Jim) King, Jennifer Mullett, David (Melissa) Schiele and Neill (Erin) Mullett; great-granchildren Katelyn, Emily, Molly, Lucy, Owen, Matthew, Morgan, Carson, Sydney, Mason and Landon and a brother Bruce Mortensen of Kalamazoo.

Funeral services for Virginia K. “Ginny” Mullett will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 22, 2011 at Hope Community Church in Niles, with the Rev. Michael Smith officiating.

Interment will be at Silverbrook Cemetery in Niles.

Arrangements were made by Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles.

Contributions may be made to the Hope Community Church.

HUGH DEAN DIES; ILL FOUR MONTHS

Hugh Dean, 85, of 111 North Fourth street, died Sunday night in St. Joseph hospital, South Bend, Ind., after a four-month illness of complications.  He was born Oct. 22, 1856 in Greenock, Scotland, and came to Niles about 65 years ago from Hamilton, O.  He married the former Miss Margaret Deutsch in Niles. She died in 1931.

They returned to Hamilton for a few years but moved back to Niles and for more than 50 years he was employed by the French Paper company before retiring in 1935.

He leaves three daughters, Mrs. Harry J. Barman and Mrs. Charles E. Silsbee, both of Nies; and Mrs. J.F. Seagreaves, Cincinnati, and two grandsons, Dean Seagreaves, Buffalo, N.Y ; and John F. Seagreaves, Jr., New Orleans, La.

Friends may call at the Rutherford funeral home until noon Wednesday. Services will be at 2 Wednesday afternoon in the Presbyterian church.  The Rev. G.W. Simon will officiate, and burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

DEAN RITES

Christine Landeck, Near B. Springs, Dies Here Today

Mrs. Christine Landeck, 45, Route 2, Berrien Springs, died at 12:50 this morning in Pawating hospital after an illness of 11 days.  Death was attributed to coronary thrombosis.

She was born Aug. 29, 1896, at Chicago, Ill., and lived near Berrien Springs for the last five years.

Mrs. Landeck leaves her husband, August; a daughter, Dorothy Mae, at home; a son, George, Niles; a grandson, Larry Landeck, Niles; five sisters, Mrs. Theresa Moscato, Shelby, Ind., and Mrs. Barbara Crohn, Mrs. Estelle Nelson, Mrs. Anna Burke and Mrs. Helen Cieplak, all of Chicago, and two brothers, John and Nicholas Baumann, both of Chicago.

Funeral services for another brother, George Baumann, were held Monday in Chicago.

Services for Mrs. Christine Landeck, 45, Route 2, Berrien Springs, who died Tuesday morning in Pawating hospital after an illness of 11 days, will be held at 10:30 Friday morning in the Rutherford funeral home.  The Rev. Mary Reist, 16, Route 2, Dies; Rites Saturday

Miss Mary Elizabeth Reist, 16, of Route 2, died Wednesday in University hospital at Ann Arbor where she had been a patient for five months. The body was brought Thursday to the Price and Kiger funeral home where friends may call.

She was born June 17, 1925 at Kalamazoo and had lived near Niles since infancy. Miss Reist leaves her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Reist, and five sisters and three brothers, all Route 2.

Services will be conducted at 2 Saturday afternoon in the Price and Kiger funeral home by the Rev. J. Kenneth Hoffmaster.  Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

Services for Miss Mary Elizabeth Reist, 16, of route 2, who died Wednesday in University hospital, Ann Arbor, were conducted this afternoon in the Price and Kiger funeral home by the Rev. J. Kenneth Hoffmaster. Burial was in Silverbrook cemetery.

ALBERT KATER, 50, COMMITS SUICIDE

Lifeless body of Albert Kater, 50, with a clothes-line around the neck and suspended from a rafter in the barn at the home of his brother, Fred Kater, Route 4, was found at 5:15 Friday afternoon.  Kater had been in ill health.

Coroner William N. Pifer issued a suicide verdict. He said Kater was dead several hours before the body was discovered by two children of Fred Kater when they returned from school.  Their parents were at work.

Here 13 Years

Kater was born July 22, 1891 at Chicago, Ill., and came to Niles 13 years ago. He had been employed as a chef.

He leaves his widow, Iva, Clinton, Ind.; two children by a former marriage, Lorraine and Joseph, both of Chicago; a sister, Mrs. William Jarm, Cleveland; and two brothers, Emil, Chicago, and Fred, Route 4.

Friends may call at the Pifer funeral home, where services will be conducted at 4 Monday afternoon by the Rev. J. Kenneth Hoffmaster will officiate. Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

KATER FUNERAL

Services for Albert Kater, 50, who hanged himself Friday in the home of his brother, Fred, Route 4, will be conducted at 4 this afternoon in the Pifer funeral home by the Rev. J. Kenneth Hoffmaster.  Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery. Pallbearers will be six Niles policemen, Fred Solloway, Thomas Whiteside, Harry Petersen, Arthur Pears, Arthur Hall and Frank Forrest.

MRS. ANNA PEASE STRICKEN SUNDAY

Mrs. Anna S. Pease, 73, of Route 4, died at 2 Sunday morning in Pawating hospital after an illness of one year.  She was born June 14, 1868 in Joliet, Ill., but lived most of her life in the Niles area.  She was married March 16, 1890, in Niles to Jerome Pease.

Mrs. Pease leaves her husband; two daughters, Mrs. Homer Young, Niles; and Mrs. Chester Schaus, Watervliet; a son, Palmer, Mishawaka, Ind.; and three brothers, Arza Williams, Baltimore, Md.; and Palmer and Charles Williams, both of Los Angeles, Calif.

Friends may call at the Price and Kiger chapel, where services will be conducted at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon by the Rev. J. Kenneth Hoffmaster. Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.
