NILES--Dwayne D. Manuel, three-month-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin J. Manuel, 1025 N. Sixth St., died at 4 a.m. Wednesday in the University of Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor.

Dwayne was born May 5, 1969, in Buchanan.

In addition to his parents, Dwayne is survived by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Willie Smoot, Benton, Mo., and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Richardson, Anderson, Ind.; three brothers, Michael, Wilbert and Walter, all at home and a sister, Sheila, also at home.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the Pifer Funeral Home.  Burial in Silverbrook Cemetery will follow.

Friends may call after 7 tonight in the funeral home.

 

Dreibelbis, Charles R.

NILES--Charles R. Dreibelbis, 67, of 1023 Howard St., died at 7 a.m. today in Pawating Hospital.

A retired railroad engineer with Penn Central Railroad, Mr. Dreibelbis was born July 10, 1902 in North Liberty, Ind., and had lived her since 1920, coming from his birth place.  He married the former Elsie Beringer, who survives, on April 26, 1923, in South Bend.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Dreibelbis is survived by a son, Charles R., Niles; a daughter, Mrs. Dale Kloko, Niles; two brothers, Dewey, Crumstown, Ind. and Max, Osceola, Ind.; a half-brother, Norman, North Liberty; two sisters, Mrs. Lambert Mattys, Osceola and Mrs. John Springman, Lakeville, Ind.; three half-sisters, Mrs. Morris Searfoss, Walkerton, Ind., Mrs. Eugene Lamphert, Mishawaka and Mrs. Harold Bell, Walkerton, Ind.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday in the Pifer Funeral Home with the minister Robert Mallett, formerly of the St. Joseph Michigan First Church of Christ, officiating.  Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Friends may call after tonight at the funeral home.

GARLAND, Tex.--Mrs. Joan[sic] T. Paty, 79, of 1300 Avenue East, formerly of Niles, died here Wednesday.

Mrs. Paty was born July 11, 1889, and is survived by a sister, Mrs. I.T. Murrah, of Garland.

Commital services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Niles in the Silverbrook Cemetery, with the Rev. John R. Tolly of the Huntly Memorial Baptist church officiating.

 

Schadler, Olga

NILES--Mrs. Olga Schadler, 66, of 1829 River Bluff Road, died at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Berrien General Hospital.

Mrs. Schadler was born Oct. 20, 1902, in Poland, and had lived here for 11 years, coming from Chicago. She married Carl Schadler, who survives, on Aug. 9, 1958, in St. Joseph.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Schadler is survived by two stepsons, Carl H. Schadler, Niles and Robert Schadler, Stevensville; two daughters, Mrs. Virgil Hile and Mrs. Gale Stiles both of Berrien Springs and 13 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Pifer Funeral Home, with the retired Elder Alvin W. Perrine of the Berrien Springs Seventh-day Adventist Church officiating. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Berrien County Cancer Society.

 

Schmuhl, John H.

NILES--John H. Schmuhl, 76, of 1617 Clarendon Ave., died at 7:30 a.m. today in Pawating Hospital, after an illness of one year.

Schmuhl, a retired conductor on the New york Central Railroad, was born Sept. 3, 1892, in Michigan City, Ind., and had lived here since 1929, coming from Michigan City. He married the former Hazel M. Huggett, who preceded him in death, on Nov. 25, 1915 in Watertown, Wis. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen.

Mr. Schmuhl is survived by a son, Gerald H. Schmuhl, Niles and three brothers, Lorenz, Michigan City, Walter, Baroda, Mich. and Paul, Baraboo, Wis.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Halbritter Funeral Home with the Rev. John R. Wyngarden of the First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. Saturday.

Sylvester E. “Sly” Gross, 86, of Stateline Road, Niles, passed away on Saturday, July 16, 2011 at Lakeland Regional Health System in St. Joseph following an extended illness. A time of visitation will be on Wednesday, July 20 from 6 until 8 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Niles. William Gombosi Jr., 84, of East Bertrand Road in Niles, Mich., died at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at Buchanan Meadows Living Center of an extended illness.

Mr. Gombosi was born on Feb. 18, 1927 in Buchanan, Mich., to William and Mildred Ann (Yeoman) Gombosi Sr. He graduated from Niles High School and lived in this area most of his life. He hired-on with the New York Central Railroad and served 41 years before retiring from Conrail.

William was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army.

He was a member of Community Baptist Church in South Bend, Ind., and American Legion Post #53 in Montana.

On Sept. 11, 1954 in Niles, he married the former Wanda (Weaver) Gano, who survives.

Surviving family also includes their children, James (Leslie) Gambosi of Delanco, N.J., Peggy (Westin) Hutchings of Dickson, Tenn., Nancy (John) Jones of Kalamazoo, Mich., and Thomas Gombosi of Niles; grandchildren, Paul, Carla, Jeffrey, Maegan, Lisa, Jeremy, Andra, Nathan, Stefani, and Thomas; great-grandchildren, Cameron, Jack, Ella, Karrisa, Erin, twins Madilyn and Angela, twins Nolan and Morgan, Hunter and Lili.

He was preceded in death by his brother, David Gombosi.

The funeral service for William Gombosi Jr. will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 25, 2011 at Community Baptist Church in South Bend, Ind., with Rev. Steven Stadtmiller of the church officiating, and will conclude with the Veteran’s Flag Presentation and “Taps” in the churchyard performed by the United States Army Honor Guard.

Committal Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Silverbrook Cemetery in Niles.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, July 24 at Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles. Contributions in memory of Bill may be made to Hospice at Home.
